OBK is a community run, non-denominational, industrial kitchen where meals are prepared for distribution to needy people across Sydney. Last year, we made 120,000 meals that were distributed to disadvantaged Australians.

Through cooking and packaging meals, your group will take part in a meaningful experience together. You will hear inspiring stories from those benefiting from the meals you have made, giving your group a sense of humility and fulfilment.
What We Do
We Support Our Community
In Australia, millions of people have experienced food insecurity in the past year alone. Through donations, event bookings and volunteer efforts, we are able to provide meals and a place of community for thousands of New South Wales residents.
We Support Local Business Incubation
If you’re a small catering business looking for kitchen hire or you want to start your own food business but don’t have the proper resources, then we have a large commercial kitchen that can be hired for your use.
We Prepare Food for the Disadvantaged
With your help, we have served 120,000 meals to the homeless and prepared 60,000 pounds of food. This is done with the help of volunteers, who have collectively logged 200,000 hours.

Our Mission
Our Big Kitchen is a registered charity (ABN 11 149 226 568) that nourishes, educates, empowers and supports people in need and always with love. We prepare and distribute more than 250,000 meals and support 33+ charities and thousands of individuals. We are able to do this through meaningful volunteering experiences.
Our Philosophy
OBK believes in the power of giving. Through giving you receive. We offer a safe, non-judgemental environment where people from all walks of life can connect through doing good. Food and giving meals is the positive end result but the journey of how the meal was made is just as important.
Our Methods
OBK undertakes food rescue, working closely with organizations like SecondBite and Foodbank to minimize waste and turn fresh produce into home cooked meals. OBK also needs to buy ingredients for meal preparation as fruit and vegetables are the main food types we rescue.
Makery is HACCP approved and Kosher and Halal certified, so no matter what the event, you can be sure that everyone will be able to enjoy your cooking.
Our Story
It started with one meal.
Our Big Kitchen (OBK) was founded in 2005 - by Rabbi Doctor Dovid Slavin and Laya Slavin. Their community had gathered to cook for a local family in need; they were struck by the impact communal cooking could have on people's lives. With that, OBK was born.
The initiative gained the support of local businesses and volunteers, who generously gave their time and skills to construct our large-scale industrial kitchen in Bondi. This space remains our headquarters today, and still holds the same magical atmosphere that inspired OBK all those years ago.
Our People
Food is a common denominator across all barriers, prejudice and judgement. We are proud to have so many amazing people who have helped grow and shape OBK today. Sponsors, staff, volunteers, deputy board and community workers all working together to help our community.
OBK is governed by an independent Advisory Board which includes representatives from the business world, legal profession and community organisations.
