Events and Programs

We regularly host a variety of events and programs, which are open to different community members to join. Check out our ongoing programs featured below.

Seniors Group

Our seniors group meets every Tuesday from 10am at OBK. Bring along your culinary experience for a fun morning, a chat and a coffee, while you help us prepare and cook to stock the OBK pantry with delicious food!.

Challah baking

Every Thursday morning from 11am our kitchen is filled with the mouth-watering smell of challahs baking in the oven. Come and join the team with challah baking and Shabbat preparations.

Monthly charity cook-in

Join our team of volunteers, and help them cook up a storm to stock our freezers full of delicious meals for those in need. Cook-ins are held on the first Tuesday of every month from 10am-3pm.

Community Service for school students

We help schools with their community service curriculum by enabling students to come in to the kitchen and prepare food for charity. This can either be on weekday afternoons from 4-6pm or schools can contact us to set up their own time and date. Join our afternoon program or book in your own community service.

Other initiatives on the go at OBK

We are always looking for new ways to extend our reach across all areas of society and help those with real needs. Some of these initiatives include:

  • Cooking therapy for the disabled
We have a number of different facilities for the disabled using the kitchen as part of their program. Participants are split up according to their needs levels and their supervisors guide them with preparing, cooking and cleaning up. Others who are more capable come in to learn about cooking and developing their own product for sale. Contact us for more information.
  • Counter-disaster plan
OBK is a part of the NSW counter-disaster plan. We provide meals for the ambulance, police and fire services. In times of disaster, such as the Mumbai terrorist shootings or recent Queensland floods, community members came together to participate in cook-ins to help those affected.
  • Corrective services rehabilitation
Under an arrangement with NSW Department of Corrective Services, we provide work for people who have been sentenced to perform community service or are on prison work-release programs.
  • Barista course for unemployed & homeless
The Bravo Coffee company has donated a state of the art Espresso machine to OBK and will be running coffee-making courses for unemployed and homeless people. This will help them increase their skills and set up future employment prospects.
