Seniors Group

Seniors Group

Involving older members of our community….every second Tuesday a lively group of seniors come in to OBK to cook up a storm. They help stock our freezers and share their years of cooking expertise!

Reaching out to all parts of the community

At Our Big Kitchen we try and involve people from all parts of the community in what we do. One of the key challenges is reaching out to those like the elderly who may be less mobile or socially isolated, or may just not have the energy that their younger counterparts do. What they do have is loads of experience, time and a willingness to help out!

Harnessing the experience and passion of our seniors

Our Seniors Group was started as a way to bring together our older volunteers to work together and help those in need. Every second Tuesday this group – comprised mainly of residents from the Bnei Brit Retirement Village in Rose Bay – come to the kitchen to cook. From baking biscuits to preparing delicious quiches, the ladies are always happy to share their recipes and to teach our younger volunteers a thing or two!

As participant Cynthia Helfet explains, “For us, our visits to OBK are a fun way to spend a morning. We get to chat and work together, and it is good to know that what we make is being distributed to people in real need. We are so happy to be able to be useful and give back.”

We are always looking for more volunteers to join our Seniors Group. If you would like to find out when it’s on next or join up, please click here.
